Top class rugby at AFA South Darwin 10s

The 2014 Australian Financial Advisers (AFA) South Darwin 10’s competition provided an all important hit out for Darwin rugby clubs before the official Northern Territory Rugby season commences on Saturday 29 March.

The AFA South Darwin 10s was held at Warren Park on Saturday 1 March. With over 350 in attendance and eight teams participating, the event was a huge success with the enthusiasm of the teams and spirit in which the competition was played.

AFA’s Executive Relationship Manager Jocelyn Cull said the AFA South Darwin 10’s was not only a success for South Darwin, but also the wider rugby union community. “It’s been a tremendous effort by the South Darwin Rugby Club’s Committee to put this together and there is a real energy amoung all the teams. We believe this event has the foundations to develop into a top class event to benefit rugby and attract teams outside of Darwin.”

Event Organiser and South Darwin Rugby Union Club Captain Steven Eardley said the support of the eight teams from Darwin’s rugby club made the event. “We were grateful for the involvement of our fellow Rugby clubs across Darwin. The event also featured the Grey Hares Over 35s team which was great to see. We also co-incided the event with South Darwin Rugby Union Junior sign on day and this ensured we could attract more fans to Warren Park for the AFA 10s.”

Casuarina Cougars took out the AFA 10’s competition 28-0 defeating Pacific Island 10’s in the Finals and AFA presented the Cougars with the winning prize money of $1,000.

The winner of the Hahn SuperDry 100m Sprint was new incoming Souths back line player Tom Hiramatsu. The 100m sprint was run in honour of former South Darwin Sporting League President Steve Heggen. The 100m Sprint also featured Heggen’s son and current South Darwin Rugby Union member Jud.
